Are you wanting to make engaging and captivating Instagram Reels videos, but don’t know where to begin?

Feeling stuck on how to make your Instagram reels more interesting?

In this video, I’ll be sharing some tips and tricks on how to film and edit a killer Instagram reel.

First things first, let’s talk about the importance of having a storyline.

A reel without a clear narrative can easily become forgettable, so make sure you know what your video is about before you start filming.

And remember, reels are short and sweet, so keep it concise and to the point.

The example I’ll be using is a reel I made recently of me taking my dog to the park.

The beginning would be us arriving at the park.

The middle would be my dog chasing a ball.

And the end would be us leaving.

Not exactly exciting, but filmed and edited together it can turn into something entertaining.

When filming think in scenes. Avoid the commonly used camera spray technique of moving the camera along with the action.

Instead use static shots at various angles.

The first shot is an establishing shot with the dog in the foreground and a park sign behind her. Without any info you know exactly what this video will be about.

To make it cohesive and to make it look like I filmed with several cameras, I made sure to film the same scenes at different angles.

For example you see me walking along the path turning towards the grass, walking out onto the grass, taking the leash off, and throwing the ball.

I didn’t have a camera stand with me so I used whatever was available be it a park bench or treelimb for shots that I was in.

I also set my camera to slow-mo for a few of the action shots to break it up a bit.

Try to keep the clips 10-20 sec at most so you don’t miss anything

Also try play around with different shots to help with the storyline.

For example the dog playing with the ball in various ways, the slimy ball, and the dog laying down and being clippped.

The reel starts to wrap up with the Sofie laying down and ready to go home.

The end shot is your standard walking into the sunset leaving the park to give the viewer some closure.

EDITING

Now that I had all of shots the next step is to edit everything together which I did entirely in the Instagram app.

Before adding my footage, I went through and placed all of my clips in an album in the Photo app.

I then went through quickly and selected my favorites which I then placed in a separate folder.

I’m pretty ruthless when it comes to clip selection, so only select the best of the best.

Once complete I started importing the clips one at a time.

Once imported I started adjusting the timeline first by changing the order of the clips, deleting ones that didn’t fit, or importing a few more to enhance the storyline.

But instead of one static shot I used 4 with the next clip picking up where other left off giving you the illusion of multiple cameras.

OI also mixed it up so it was the same action every single scene.

I made sure to use close ups and wide shots to keep it engaging.

In the app you can adjust the length of the clip and this can help you focus on the most interesting part of the scene.

I didn’t add any effects except for a blur effect at the end give some finality.

For the music I chose James Browns Super Bad. Besides the thumping funk beat the lyrics watch me I got it, reflects the theme of the video.

Deciding on the right choice of music is critical as that doesn’t complent the action can ruin an otherwise good video. So take your time with this.

After a few play through and slight adjustments the video is complete and ready to share.

Now the probaly took me two hours to film and edit but may take you longer and that’s fine. If you take alittle extra time you’ll get a better redsult.

Make sure to save your video as a draft so you can come back and work on it later.
